Svenja Behrendt Appointed Junior Professor of Public Law in Mannheim

Researcher also continuing postdoctoral lecturing qualification at the Max Planck Institute

Svenja Behrendt joined the University of Mannheim’s Department of Law as a junior professor of public law in February 2024. She will continue to pursue her German postdoctoral lecturing qualification (habilitation) at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law (MPI-CSL) in Freiburg. Svenja will also continue to be affiliated with the Institute as a postdoctoral researcher.

Her research interests include fundamental and human rights, con­sti­tu­tional law, legal theory, democracy (and democratic back­slid­ing), digitalization, AI, and constitutional issues of climate change.

Prior to joining the MPI-CSL in Freiburg in September 2023, Svenja completed her doctorate at Heinrich Heine University (HHU) Düssel­dorf on “Entzauberung des Rechts auf informationelle Selbst­bestim­mung: Eine Untersuchung zu den Grundlagen der Grundrechte” (“Demystifying the Right to Informational Self-Determination: An Investigation of the Foundations of Fundamental Rights”). She was awarded the prize for best dissertation of the year from HHU’s Faculty of Law in 2021.
